Devi Arts —
Where Tradition Meets the Hand of the Artist.
Each painting is built up over weeks — starting from a cut plywood board layered with cloth and three coats of base paste, then fine sketching, hand-built relief, 22-carat gold leaf and natural pigments, all the way through to the final detailing.

Just finished my first Tanjore painting from scratch with MS Ratna! She is a fantastic teacher who pays close attention to every detail. She guided me through every step and ensured that the work is corrected until it’s perfect. Her teaching style is very motivating and professional. I’m so happy with how my painting turned out! Highly recommended for anyone looking for thorough, high-quality instruction!

My journey with "Devi Arts Tanjore Painting online class." Mrs Ratna Devi is such a brilliant teacher with great expertise. Extremely patient while teaching the technique of tanjore art and a warm soul and soft spoken. She is very intricate with her work and generous with sharing her knowledge. Her passion for teaching and the art is commendable. Completing a painting brings immense joy and sense of peace .

I have done 2 paintings with Ratna so far. Both times, fortunately or unfortunately, I was in a time crunch for various personal reasons. The very first time I met her, she not knowing if I can even hold a brush, I just told her “I need to get a Lakshmi done in 3 months. Can you help me?”. She must have thought I’m crazy to ask such a thing for a beginner Tanjore painting but I had my reasons. Her fb page was super impressive and I knew she could help me do what I wanted. She said “we will try. It depends on how fast you can grasp”. This was in 2019. I put all my efforts with the homework she gave me and it was very hard to satisfy her. She is a perfectionist - a trait I truly admire. For every single stroke she kept telling me it had to go up or down, thin or thick. Sometimes I was annoyed that she was so picky, in the beginning not knowing the final impact. Then when I finished my painting IN 3 MONTHS as promised, in retrospect I understood why she gave me each of those corrections that she made me do. It was such a fulfilling experience. She helped me out in the end fixing my errors and I’m so thankful coz by the end, my confidence went low. The painting came out beautifully. Fast forward to 2024, I had another such crazy urgent request to do Muruga with Valli and Devasena. This time to add to the challenge, I was gonna do online classes so she won’t be there to correct my mistakes or help me face to face. Knowing my crazy request, I got the same expected answer. In the middle of a LOT of personal challenges for both of us, she said ok let’s try. I wanted to finish this painting for a special event and we had our doubts that I’m taking more than I can do, coz this is 3 deities in place of one for the given time. The body shades and the attire are all very different for all 3 of them. Can’t even reuse the same shade a few times. It was super challenging. The last week when I had to finish, I was almost in the mode of “let me just finish. I just need it to be decent if not perfect”. But her perfectionist side took over. She made me practice the eyes so hard that in 2 days, I was able to do it all on my own. I was surprised to see that even I could do it coz I was dreading doing the eyes before even I bought the board. With each step, getting closer to it, I only feared more. But she made me do it. AND IN TIME for my event, which was huge. If you have a little bit of commitment and perseverance, and if you want to do a beautiful painting and not “just some Tanjore painting”, Ratna is your teacher. I’m so thankful that I could get her availability in tight situations both times. I look forward to doing more in the future with her, and I’d recommend her to anyone!!
